Music Clear Soul Forces, Imported From Detroit

May 16, 2012 - 10:24 am

Yankees know what it feels like. So do the players that suit up for the Lakers. Sometimes the name on the front of the jersey is bigger than the name on the back. You don’t just rep a city; you rep an entire legion of hopes and dreams. That’s what it’s like being a Detroit rapper. Cats break out all the time—Dilla, Eminem, Black Milk, Royce—but the D is always a potent strain in their DNA. Though they’re relatively new to the game, Clear Soul Forces has already made a vital impact on their city’s sound, from 2010’s Clear Soul Radio mixtape to their Departure EP. Everything is in the mix. It’s Motown sway meets golden era bounce. With four emcees and four distinct flows, their tracks are front-loaded with verse after well-written verse. “Get No Better,” off their Detroit Revolution(s) LP, is already halfway over before the hook comes in, but CFS doesn’t rely on hooks alone to draw ears in. With this crew, it’s all about lyrical fortitude and equally intelligent instrumentals. Check out an interview with E-Fav, L.A.Z., Noveliss and Ilajide after the jump, then visit them on the Red Bull Soundstage for news, videos, tracks and tour dates.

Music Saving Earth With the Fancy Space People

May 16, 2012 - 9:54 am

When life from outer space contacts you and tells you to bestow glitter space rock on the people of Earth, you do it; thus the Fancy Space People were born. “We’re ‘saving the Earth one nightclub, skate park, or gallery at a time,’ or so they tell us,” says guitarist/vocalist Don Bolles.

We picked the brains of these space rockers to get their thoughts on Pluto being demoted from its rank as a planet and on channeling the message of their extraterrestrial leaders:

Featured Gallery Music The Sleepy Sun Also Rises

May 15, 2012 - 8:43 am

Last month, Sleepy Sun released a new album. It’s called Spine Hits. It’s quicker and more energized than its two full-length predecessors, and in concert, Bret Constantino and his crew are completely unfettered when they kick out the jams. (These shots were taken at their recent Detroit gig.) I’m extremely intrigued to find out what’s to come from this band. A recent tour with Black Angels is injecting them straight into the forebrain of today’s attenuated hard rock listener, and that’s huge. Lyrically, Constantino keeps things obtuse and potent, as referenced by their latest single, “VOG.” It would behove you to keep tabs on what these guys are up to, but it would also be in your best interest to study up on their past, because regardless of what musical direction they’ll morph towards after this album, the thread they’ve woven into the fabric of rock is positively beautiful.

Gallery Music Surviving Paint Bombs, Coneheads, and Life in a Box with The UK’s fiN

May 15, 2012 - 8:00 am

For a “do it yourself” band, fIN has a lot of admirers. The UK-based four piece has received the thumbs up from award-winning producer, Adrian Bushby, as well as Muse’s drummer, Dominic Howard. They have been driving across the UK in a van, performing “toilet shows,” as vocalist Luke Joyce calls them, and winning over audiences one gig at a time. fiN recently arrived in American where they performed at South by Southwest and a slew of US dates, including a stop in Los Angeles.

We caught up with the UK rockers to discuss making music that “captures a sense of celebration,” bleeding on stage, and being paint bombed while performing with Rihanna.

May 14, 2012 - 11:21 am

Everything is “indie” these days. Owls are in; mustaches are in; Palestinian “scarves” (kaffiyeh) are in; and indie is in. Brooklyn, the proverbial Octomom of American indie music, has popped out yet another prodigal child: Sleigh Bells. However, this baby has earned a particularly large amount of buzz.

Featured Gallery Music HoneyHoney’s “Angel of Death”

May 14, 2012 - 10:48 am

We love HoneyHoney, I mean how can you not? They’ve mastered the art of modernizing roots music, they make a banjo look cool, and you never know what exactly is going to come out of either of their mouths. The duo is currently on the road opening for James Morrison, who told a Los Angeles audience that, “HoneyHoney was so good that I shit myself watching them.” Is there a greater compliment you can receive from a headliner?

We caught up with HoneyHoney’s Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe for a preshow dressing room chat. Ben told us tales of spores attacking ants, while Suzanne shared early touring memories of Everclear’s Art Alexakis forbidding them from using a dressing room out of fear of being poisoned.

Film Fridays 5 Directors Who Predicted the Future Better Than Most Scientists Ever Could

May 11, 2012 - 5:21 pm

James Cameron – The Abyss: Some people may call Cameron a pompous ass — at least he’s a prophetic pompous ass. In the sense that he’s the one making his own prophecies come true.

His film The Abyss, about a voyage to the very bottom of the sea where aliens live, turned to reality 23 years later when he became the first to voyage to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean. (He’ll also be releasing a film on exactly what kind of weird alien stuff he found there, next year.)

Featured Gallery Music Silversun Pickups Take You To Their “Neck of The Woods”

May 11, 2012 - 9:20 am

It’s been three years since their last album but the wait is officially over. Silversun Pickups released “Neck of The Woods” this past Tuesday and kicked off the album release date with a morning performance at Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ. Fans surrounded the stage as Brian Aubert, Chris Guanlao, Joe Lester, and Nikki Monninger performed three tracks off their brand new disc, “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings),” “The Pit,” and “Dots and Dashes (Enough Already).” Also on the agenda were hit singles “Lazy Eye” and “Panic Switch.”

ChinaShop caught up Brian and Chris following their set to discuss how they overly celebrated the night before (and were currently nursing hangovers), as well as the magic behind recording where Brian grew up in Topanga Canyon. We also chatted about the days of home stereo systems, typewriters, and whether or not people still use wite-out.
